Should you turn off your phone when not in use?
Should you turn your phone off when you're not using it? Honestly, that's a tough one. I mean, I practically live on my phone! I rarely turn it off, unless I'm going somewhere with, like, absolutely no signal – total wilderness, you know? Then, yeah, I'll power it down. Saves battery, which is a good thing. My phone's battery life is already kinda pathetic, it barely lasts a day as it is. Remember that time I went hiking in Yosemite and my phone died halfway up Half Dome? Not fun.
But day-to-day? Leaving it on feels...normal. I guess. It's always there, buzzing with notifications – sometimes important ones, sometimes just silly cat videos. It's my connection to everything, right?
Now, if I knew I wouldn't touch the darn thing for weeks – like, say, a month-long backpacking trip through Patagonia – oh yeah, I'd absolutely turn it off. Completely off. And probably put it somewhere safe, maybe in a ziploc bag, because who knows what could happen to it otherwise? It's just responsible, right? For the battery, sure, but also...for my own sanity, maybe? Sometimes I think being constantly connected is a bit much. Too much, even.
I read somewhere – I think it was on some tech blog, or maybe it was a podcast? – that constantly having your phone on can drain the battery faster in the long run, even if you're not actively using it. Something about background processes and all that techy stuff. I don't fully understand it, but it makes sense, you know? Like, it's always working, even when it seems like it's resting. It's kind of like that friend who's always "busy" even when they're doing nothing... Except this friend is my phone and it drains my battery instead of my emotional energy. (Mostly.)
