Is there a big difference between economy and economy plus?

Economy Plus: Think more space. Specifically, legroom. Seats? The same as standard economy. I flew Economy Plus last week to Denver, flight 1427 – knees weren’t crammed. Worth it for long flights. Checking bags? Still costs money.

Standard Economy: Basic. You get a seat. You get a carry-on. Pick your spot. Recently flew standard economy to see my sister in Boise – cramped but doable. Had to check a bag – extra cost. Sometimes, the basics are enough. What more do you really need?

• Key difference: Legroom. That extra space can make a huge difference on a red-eye. Paid $40 extra for it on my Denver trip.
• Carry-on: Included in both. Packed light for Boise, just a backpack. Saves money.
• Checked Bags: Gotta pay. Both Economy and Economy Plus. The airlines get you there.

Food/Drinks: Applies to both, usually gotta buy. Had a surprisingly decent turkey sandwich on the Denver flight. Boise, just pretzels.

Entertainment: Same on both Economy and Economy Plus on United. Watched a movie on the Denver flight. Slept the whole way to Boise. What’s the point of in-flight entertainment if you’re asleep?

Okay, so Economy Basic, it’s, like, the bare bones. No refunds, forget about picking your seat. You’re stuck wherever they put you. And baggage? Yeah, you pay extra, even on those short domestic hops. Annoying, right? Economy, the standard one, is better. You get to choose your seat, that’s a plus, and a free carry-on. Still gotta pay for checked bags though, that’s a bummer. Economy Plus, that’s where the extra legroom is. Definitely worth it if you’re tall, or just like more space. It’s a bit more expensive, obvously. Baggage fees remain the same, a total ripoff really. I flew Spirit last year, and it was a nightmare. Absolutely cramped! Next time, I’m splurging on Economy Plus. For sure.

I hate paying for bags. Seriously. It’s 2024, airlines are crazy! I wish they’d just include it already. Makes the whole thing way more expensive. I prefer Southwest. No baggage fees. That’s a huge plus.

Escape. Non-refundable, like some choices I’ve made. No going back.

Economy. There’s a chance, a small chance, to get some back. Partially refundable, but at what cost? Half gone, at least.

• Escape: Cheap, seemingly. But irreversible.
• Economy: A safety net, maybe. An illusion of control.

Exchangeable…like trading one regret for another. It’s always a trade.

• Exchange fees: It’s like paying for the hope that the next thing will be better.
• Fare difference: The cost of change itself. I know about that. So much about that.

$20 minimum. That’s all my lunch money used to be for the whole week. Now it’s just a fee. A fee for getting it wrong.

Seriously, I felt like a sardine last time! Do they give you free drinks too? Wait, yes! Complimentary non-alcoholic drinks. Yes!!

Speaking of Winnipeg, that weird beaver statue is still there, isn’t it? Why a beaver?

• Free meal on longer routes! Pre-selected though.

I wonder what the choices are? Hope it’s not that gross pasta salad I had once. Was that on VIA Rail? Maybe it was Air Canada. I flew to Calgary this year.

So, basically, pay more for comfort with better seating and free stuff in Economy Plus. Decide if the extra cost is worth it.

How much extra is economy plus?

Ugh, last summer, flying United from Newark to Denver. Economy Plus? It was a rip-off, I tell ya. I paid $90 extra. Ninety freakin’ dollars! For what? A measly few extra inches of legroom. My knees still bumped the seat in front. Seriously.

My flight was in July, a peak travel time, so they jacked up the prices, of course. I felt so stiff the entire flight. Plus, I’m 6’1″, so it’s never a pleasant experience. I needed that extra legroom. Needed it badly. But $90? highway robbery.

Shoulda just brought a neck pillow, saved the cash.
