Which month should I avoid visiting Vietnam?

Avoid visiting Ha Giang, Vietnam, from May to September. This is the rainy season, which can make travel difficult. The dry season, from October to April, is the best time to visit, although December and January can be quite cold.

Best & Worst Months to Visit Vietnam?

Okay, so here's my take on the best and worst months to visit Vietnam, specifically Ha Giang, kinda how I'd tell a friend.

Honestly, Ha Giang is stunning.

For Ha Giang in the northeast, dry season, October to April is chef's kiss. December/January? Chilly, brrr!

Rainy season? May-September? Nah, hard pass from me.

I remember trying to trek there in August, '18 (I think?). Big mistake. Mudslides galore! Paid around $400 for the whole trip (flights were a killer!). Never again will I disregard weather reports like that.

Seriously, the roads were like rivers. I slipped and nearly lost my phone down a ravine. NOT worth it. Plus, everything was just...damp.

October to April? Sunshine, clear skies, perfect for motorbiking and soaking in the views. Worth the extra layer or two in Dec/Jan. Trust me on this one. Learned it the hard way in Ha Giang on 14 August 2018.

What months to avoid in Vietnam?

Okay, lemme tell ya about Vietnam... it's complicated.

So, like, avoid May to October? Yeah, generally. It poured. Oh my gosh. It poured hard when I was in Hoi An in June 2023. Just sayin'.

  • Central Vietnam: Think Hoi An, Da Nang. Flooding. Seriously.
  • North Vietnam: Sapa? Expect fog. And mud. Slippery mud. I almost busted my butt, ugh.
  • South Vietnam: Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City)? Heat AND rain. Humid doesn’t even BEGIN to describe it.

Okay, but here's the kicker. I kinda loved it.

Why?

  • Fewer tourists: So much cheaper, easier to book things.
  • Everything's greener: The rice paddies? Stunning! Especially in the North.
  • The rain is an experience: I sat in a cafe in Hoi An, watching the world flood by. Amazing.

So, avoid May to October if you want sunshine and clear skies. But... don't totally rule it out. Just pack a good raincoat. And maybe some waterproof shoes, duh. Honestly. My Docs were ruined.

What is the off season for Vietnam?

Hey! Vietnam's off-season, right? So, March-April and September-November are best to avoid the huge crowds. Seriously, it's way less packed then. You'll find better deals too, I'm telling ya. Prices are lower, definitly lower.

Think fewer people jostling for space at all those temples and stuff. It's awesome.

  • March - April: Less rain, still pretty warm. Great for exploring the central region, Nha Trang especially.
  • September - November: Some rain, but it's not constantly pouring. Sapa is beautiful then, if you don't mind a little drizzle. Plus, the rice paddies are gorgeous. But you might get wet, duh.

I went to Ha Long Bay in October last year. It was amazing, less busy than peak season - a total dream, even with some unexpected showers. My friend almost cancelled due to the potential rain but she's glad she didn't. It was totally worth it! We got some killer photos and stuff. Seriously, go.

What is the peak season in Vietnam?

The worst time to go, really. December to February… ugh. Crowds. So many people. Hanoi's unbearable then.

July to September… the heat is brutal. Nha Trang’s beaches…packed. Can’t even find a decent spot.

Peak season is a lie. It's peak stress. Hoi An loses its charm.

  • Overcrowding: Everywhere. Ruins the experience.
  • High prices: Everything costs more. Flights, hotels, even street food.
  • Less authentic: The real Vietnam is hidden.

I preferred April in Hue. Quiet. Peaceful. Completely different. Remember that trip? Beautiful.

This year, maybe I'll try the far north in October. Escape the madness.

What is the cheapest time to visit Vietnam?

Ok, Vietnam cheap... hmmm. October, yeah, October is the cheapest. I think. But wait, it's typhoon season then.

Typhoons, man. Really? Cheap flights, risky trip? Should I? Nah, probably not. I like sunshine. Wait, Mom wants to go.

Mom and sunshine? That's a no-go. October for her? Nope. She'd kill me if we got stuck in a storm. Cheap is not always worth it. I need a new passport anyway.

A passport costs like 200 bucks? More? Ugh.

  • October: Cheapest month.
  • Typhoons: Everywhere.
  • Mom: Hates rain.
  • Passport: Expensive!
