Ugh, a week in Vietnam? Crazy ambitious, right? I spent two weeks there, just scratching the surface!
My trip, October 2022, focused on the north. Hanoi's Old Quarter was a sensory overload – amazing street food, chaotic beauty. Ha Long Bay? Breathtaking. Seriously. Cruised around those limestone karsts, kayaking in hidden lagoons – pure magic.
That said, a week could work. You'd need a super tight plan. Maybe focus on just one area like central Vietnam – Hoi An, Hue, Da Nang. You'd get a taste but miss a ton.
The south is completely different – Ho Chi Minh City is intense, like Bangkok on steroids. You'd have to really prioritize.
Personally, I think a week is too short. But if you're really crunched for time, focus tightly on one region. It's better than nothing, but you'll crave more, trust me.
How many days are enough to cover Vietnam?
Ten days is a good starting point, though I personally found two weeks insufficient. Vietnam's diversity is staggering. You could easily spend months exploring its nooks and crannies. It's a matter of priorities, really. Life's too short for regrets, so go for it.
For a whirlwind tour, focusing on major cities:
- Hanoi (2 days): Explore the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, and indulge in street food. The chaos is charming, oddly enough.
- Ha Long Bay (1 day): A cruise is essential. The karsts are magnificent. Don't skip this. Seriously.
- Hue (1 day): Imperial City, tombs—rich history. I loved the serenity, a welcome change of pace.
- Hoi An (2 days): Tailoring, ancient town, beautiful beaches. The food there is amazing. Seriously.
- Ho Chi Minh City (3 days): Bustling metropolis, War Remnants Museum, Cu Chi Tunnels. It's intense, a sensory overload. This was my least favorite, though that's just my opinion.
Extending your trip (7-10 days or more):
- Deepen your exploration of each city. Hanoi alone could easily consume a week.
- Include Sapa for trekking in the mountains. My brother-in-law did this last year. He said it was incredible.
- Explore the Mekong Delta. Boat trips, floating markets...a whole other Vietnam.
- Consider a flight between northern and southern Vietnam to save time, which I did, because I value my time.
- Learn some basic Vietnamese phrases. It enhances the experience immensely. Trust me.
Ultimately, the ideal duration depends entirely on your interests and travel style. It's not about the number of days, but the depth of experience. Sometimes, less is more. Sometimes it is not. Think about it.
