I went to Hanoi in January 2024, thinking, “Sweet, I’ll just Uber everywhere.” Big mistake! Downloaded the app, ready to go… nothing. Zilch. Uber doesn’t work there.

I was standing near Hoan Kiem Lake, sweating (even in January!), phone in hand like an idiot. Total fail.

What I ended up using was Grab.

• Grab works, thank goodness. It’s like the Asian Uber.
• Also, local taxis are plentiful. Bargain hard though!
• Motorbike taxis too, if you’re brave… I wasn’t. That Hanoi traffic is INSANE.
• I got ripped off by one taxi driver. Cost me like $20 usd to go like 2 miles!

Lyft is a no-go also… trust me, don’t even bother downloading it. Waste of space. You will only regret that.

Motorbike taxis (xe ôm)? Negotiate! Sharpen your bargaining skills. Adventure awaits. A visceral experience. Wind in your hair, sort of.

Renting a scooter? Bold. Chaotic. Exhilarating. Only for the brave, or the foolish. The traffic…a river of steel and exhaust. I prefer Grab, personally. Less stressful. Though, controlling your destiny has its appeal.
