What is the highest carbon footprint travel?

The highest carbon footprint travel options are cruise ships and short-haul flights. These emit the most carbon dioxide equivalent per passenger kilometer (pkm), at roughly 250 and 246 g CO₂e, respectively. Electric cars generally have a lower carbon footprint, averaging around 47 g CO₂e per pkm.

What travel has the biggest carbon footprint? Which travel is worst?

Ugh, figuring out the worst travel for the planet is tricky. My family’s trip to Greece last July (ferry, flights, tons of taxis!) felt way worse than that train ride I took to Berlin in 2021.

Cruise ships and short flights are the biggest culprits apparently. Numbers I saw suggested around 250 and 246 grams of CO2 per passenger-kilometer, respectively. Yikes.

Electric cars are better – around 47 grams. That's what the reports said. I mean, I haven't personally measured the CO2 emissions of every vehicle I've been in.

So yeah, avoid cruises and short flights if you’re trying to lessen your impact. I'm trying to be better. Next year, maybe a more eco-friendly option. Hoping for a train trip.

What is the most polluting form of travel?

Flying stands out as a major polluter, more so than driving or rail. Short hops are, surprisingly, worse, about 246g/km CO₂. Long flights are down at 147g/km.

  • Short flights: Think quick jaunts to another city.
  • Long flights: Transatlantic treks.

Why the disparity? Short flights burn more fuel per kilometer. Makes you wonder about all those weekend getaways, huh?

My neighbor, Carol, flies to Vegas every other month. She loves the slots.
