What transport do you use most for IELTS?

Okay, so IELTS travel? Honestly, motorbikes. Always. It’s just how things are where I live, Hanoi. Crazy traffic, you know?

Scooters everywhere. Makes sense, cheap, zippy. Gets me to the British Council (where I took my test, cost me a bomb, by the way – like 4 million dong, that’s over $150!). Faster than a bus, for sure.

I remember that one specific day, July 12th last year. Pouring rain, typical Hanoi summer. Still, my little Honda zoomed through. Public transport would’ve been a nightmare.

The other modes are just…not practical. Buses are packed, taxis expensive. Motorbikes are my lifeblood. Essential.

What transportation do people use the most?

Cars. Duh. Everyone drives. Well, not everyone. My grandma takes the bus. Always has. Wait, does walking count? Probably more people walk than drive. Nah. Think about all the traffic. Horrible. Especially on 495. Stuck there last week. Ugh. Took me two hours to get to Mom’s. She lives in Fairfax. I’m in Arlington. Should have biked. Need to get my bike fixed. Flat tire. And the seat’s wobbly. Cars still the most though. So many different kinds. My brother just got a Tesla. Fancy. I drive a Honda Civic. 2023. Got it in blue. Love that car. Buses are everywhere too. Metro. So crowded. Walking is good exercise. Need to do more of that. Maybe tomorrow. Parking is a nightmare. That’s why people drive less in the city. NYC. Everyone takes the subway. Or walks. London too. The Tube. So many cars though. Everywhere. Gas prices are insane. Still driving. Electric cars. The future. Right?

  • Cars/Trucks: Most common. Personal use, commuting, goods transport.
  • Public Transport: Buses, metro, subway. City life. Crowded.
  • Walking: Good exercise. Practical in cities.
  • Bicycles: Eco-friendly. Need to fix mine.
  • Electric Cars: Tesla. Becoming more popular. Expensive.

What form of transport do you prefer to use ielts?

Motorbikes, obviously. Seriously, who doesn’t love dodging traffic like a caffeinated ninja?

Think of cars as land yachts, comfortable but about as agile as a walrus on roller skates. Motorbikes? More like a dragonfly. Or maybe a slightly deranged honeybee buzzing through gridlock.

Why motorbikes?

  • Parking? LOL. Cars circle blocks like vultures; I just poof, materialize in a space the size of a postage stamp. I swear, my neighbor Gary gets purple with envy.
  • Speed? Faster than explaining quantum physics to my grandma, and she’s brilliant.
  • Fuel? Sip it like a delicate tea. My wallet sings happy tunes.
  • Pure. Unadulterated. Joy. It is akin to therapy but cheaper and with more wind in your face. My therapist just sighs.

It’s freedom, baby! That is, until I get caught in the rain, then it’s just…wet freedom.

Which transport do you take most and why?

The subway. It’s always the subway. The rumble under my feet, a constant hum. A dull ache, actually. It’s familiar.

Buses? Rarely. Too slow. Too crowded. My apartment near Union Square, the commute a nightmare. The air…stale.

Why the subway? It’s faster. It’s predictable. Even if the trains are packed. Even at 2 AM. Even if its loud.

I take the subway almost daily. At least five days a week to work. Sometimes, weekends too. Sometimes seven days. It’s just… ingrained.

  • Speed: Subway wins.
  • Comfort: Not really. But it’s faster.
  • Frequency: Every few minutes, usually.
  • Cost: It’s cheap. I use a monthly pass. Definitely cheaper than a taxi.

My life is all routines. The same stations. The same faces. Sometimes I see the same people every day. A bit lonely, really.

Can you compare the advantages of planes and trains in IELTS?

Planes? Ugh, so expensive. International flights are a must though, right? Think of the time saved! But the carbon footprint…terrible. My last flight to London was a disaster. Delayed for hours!

Trains, now those are something else. Much more relaxing. I took the Amtrak from DC to New York last month – way less stressful than flying. And cheaper, definitely cheaper for that distance. Plus, you can actually walk around! No cramped seats!

Speed: Planes win hands down, obviously. Trains are better for shorter trips domestically.

Cost: Planes are pricier, especially long haul. Trains are a bargain for shorter routes. Seriously, sometimes train tickets are cheaper than gas for my car!

Environmental impact: Trains are the clear winner here. Way less pollution. Makes me feel a little better about my travel habits.

Comfort: I hate plane food. Train food, not great, but better options usually exist. Legroom is better on trains too! I can work on my laptop, not possible on many flights.

Things to consider: Do I really need to fly? Is a train feasible time-wise? Is it even an option for my destination? Will I be able to find a seat during peak hours? So many factors to balance. I wish train travel was more accessible internationally.

My personal preference: Trains, always trains if given the choice for domestic travel. The view is better, it’s less chaotic, and I sleep better. It’s a less stressful experience overall. Planes are unavoidable for long distances though.
