What is the most common type of employment in the United States?

Okay, so, you know how you sometimes wonder what most people in the US actually do for work? Well, I was looking into it the other day, and honestly? It’s a bit of a bummer. Like, the most common job in America? It’s being a cashier.

Yeah, a cashier. I mean, think about that for a sec. It kind of makes you think, doesn’t it? All those folks ringing us up at the grocery store, or the department store… they’re the majority? It’s a little depressing, right?

I’m not knocking cashiers, not at all! It’s honest work, and someone’s gotta do it. But it just feels…off. It feels like it says something kind of sad about our economy, you know? Like, so many people are stuck in these low-paying retail positions, just trying to make ends meet.

I can just imagine the daily grind. Dealing with sometimes-cranky customers all day long, standing on your feet for hours, and barely earning enough to actually, you know, live. My cousin Sarah worked as a cashier for years at a big box store before she finally managed to get a job as a dental assistant. She always talked about how draining it was, the constant pressure to be friendly and efficient while barely scraping by. It really takes a toll.

It really makes you wonder, what can we, as a society, actually do to create more opportunities? How can we help people get into careers that are not only fulfilling but also financially secure? I don’t have all the answers, obviously, but it definitely feels like something we need to be thinking about, you know? Because being a cashier shouldn’t be the most common job in the richest country in the world, should it? It just doesn’t sit right with me.
