How would you describe a train platform?
A train platform provides easy access to trains at a station. Most stations have platforms; larger ones can have many. For example, Grand Central Terminal boasts 44 platforms!
Okay, so, how would I describe a train platform? It’s… well, it’s kind of a strange place, isn’t it? Like, a concrete island in a sea of hurrying people. You know? I mean, you’re standing there, waiting, sometimes for ages – remember that time I waited an hour for the 7:15 to Leeds? Brutal. Anyway, it’s all about the access, right? Easy access to these giant metal beasts that whisk you away. That’s the main thing, I guess.
Most stations have ‘em, of course. Some have a couple, some have loads. I read somewhere – I think it was online, maybe a travel blog? – that Grand Central Terminal in New York has, like, forty-four platforms! Can you even imagine? That’s a whole lotta trains. Probably a whole lotta lost luggage too. Makes my little local station with its two platforms seem, well, pretty insignificant. But even the little ones have their charm, don’t they? That feeling of anticipation, the rumble building up as the train approaches… it’s something else. Sometimes it smells a little… you know… like old metal and maybe a hint of… something else. I’m not sure, coffee maybe? Hard to describe. But yeah, train platforms. They’re a bit of a mix. A whole lot of waiting, a whole lot of anticipation and the promise of somewhere new.
