One day in Ninh Binh? Ha! That’s like trying to eat a whole durian in one bite – pungent and overwhelming, leaving you wanting more. You’ll see some stuff, sure. Trang An? Check. Hoa Lu? Yep. But it’s a fleeting glimpse, a tease, not the full-blown romance.

Think of it this way: Ninh Binh is a slow-cooked masterpiece, not fast food. You need time to savor the flavors. Each temple whispers stories, each rice paddy shimmers with a thousand sunsets.

My trip last 2023? Three days wasn’t enough. I’m still dreaming of those cyclo rides! Seriously, book at least three days. You’ll thank me. Unless you love rushed travel experiences akin to a frantic squirrel chase, then, knock yourself out.

Things you’ll miss with just one day:

• Bai Dinh Pagoda – massive, impressive, a whole day trip in itself.
• Mua Cave – the view from the top is, and I’m not exaggerating, breathtaking.
• Exploring the quieter villages – finding hidden gems and local eateries.
• Those delectable Ninh Binh egg pancakes. Seriously, amazing. They should be on UNESCO list.

Don’t be a tourist, be a traveler. Three days minimum, I insist. More is better, duh. Besides, you’ll need extra time to recover from all the stunning beauty, and maybe to digest all those egg pancakes.

  • Mua Cave: Climb hundreds of steps for that famous Instagram view (quads will scream!).
  • Tam Coc: More boat rides! Because why not? It’s like a floating buffet of scenery, y’know?
  • Bai Dinh Pagoda: HUGE temples. Seriously, prepare for some walking. It’s like the Vegas of pagodas.

But hey, if you’re a sloth who appreciates long naps (like me), consider three days. Or even a whole darn week! It lets you explore backroads, meet locals, and actually breathe the fresh air, instead of gasping for it between temple climbs! Because let’s face it, my lungs ain’t what they used to be, not since that time I tried to run a marathon fuelled entirely by donuts. Never again!

How many nights should I stay in Ninh Binh?

• Day 2: Climb Mua Cave. It’s like scaling Mount Everest… if Everest were a really, really small hill with a killer view, plus a bunch of steps. Your thighs will hate you later.
• Day 3: Bai Dinh Pagoda. Giant Buddhas, folks! So many Buddhas, it’s like they had a sale at the Buddha store and Ninh Binh bought ’em all. Prepare for a Buddha overload. Maybe find a nice goat or some other animal to befriend along the way.
• Day 4: Trang An Grottoes. More boats! More grottoes! By now, you might be growing gills. Or just be really, really bored of boats. Explore Cuc Phuong National Park to see ancient trees and maybe a gibbon. Who knows, you might run into one.

See? Four days, jam-packed. Or three! Or two! Who am I to judge? My own vacation to Halong Bay was cut short by a rogue jellyfish and a craving for pizza. It’s your call, boss!

Is Ninh Binh worth staying overnight?

Absolutely. Ninh Binh deserves more than a day. I went in 2023, spent three nights actually, near Tam Coc. Crazy beautiful rice paddies. Seriously. Stunning.

The first day was a blur of temples and boats. Felt rushed. Wish I’d slowed down.

Second day, I biked. Best decision ever. Explored hidden villages, ate amazing street food. Found this tiny noodle shop, best pho I’ve had. Seriously.

Third day – Trang An. Epic. The boat ride was long, though. My butt hurt. Worth it, though. The caves, the scenery…wow.

Four days would be perfect. You need time to soak it in. A day trip is criminal! You miss so much. It’s not just the big sights. It’s the little things. The feeling of the place.

• Incredible scenery: Rice paddies, mountains, rivers. Breathtaking.
• Delicious food: Cheap, fresh, and amazing. Get the pho!
• Easy to get around: Bikes are your best friend. Rent one!
