Does United not allow carry-ons anymore?
United Basic Economy tickets do not include free carry-on bags. Only one personal item (purse, small backpack) is allowed. Larger carry-ons must be checked at the lobby for $35+ or at the gate for $65+. Standard Economy and other higher fares still include a free carry-on.
Okay, so United…carry-ons…what’s the deal these days? I swear, airlines are always changing things, right? It feels like every time I fly, there’s some new fee or rule I didn’t know about.
So, here’s the scoop, as far as I understand it, especially if you’re snagging those super cheap Basic Economy tickets from United (because who doesn’t love a deal, even if it’s potentially a headache later?):
Basically, no free carry-on. Like, zip. Nada. You only get one personal item, and they mean personal item. Think purse, a small backpack that can definitely fit under the seat in front of you. Don’t even think about trying to sneak anything bigger on.
Now, if you’re a rebel without a cause, and do try to bring a regular-sized carry-on, they’ll make you check it. And get this: it’ll cost you! Checking it at the lobby, like a normal suitcase, will set you back $35 or more. But, wait for it… if you wait until you get to the gate? BAM! $65! Ouch. Seriously, learn from my mistakes, folks – that’s almost the price of the ticket itself! I may or may not have learned this the hard way on a trip to see my sister in Chicago a few years ago. Let’s just say I was not a happy camper.
But, don’t despair! If you booked a regular ol’ Standard Economy ticket (or anything higher, like business or first class, if you’re fancy!), then you still get your free carry-on. So, that’s a win.
Honestly, it’s just something you really need to check before you book, you know? Because that “amazing” deal might not be so amazing once you factor in all the extra costs! Just a little something to keep in mind when you’re planning your next adventure. Safe travels!
